PART II

LIVING IN THE VISIBLE WORLD: A WEB OF INFINITE POSSIBILITIES

CHAPTER FIVE

Creating Karmic Relationships

Almost every person who comes to me is in search of insight into his or her romantic life. For many, many people it is extremely difficult to find the right person— someone they can love unconditionally and who will love them in return, and who will make them feel fulfilled and complete. Whenever I do private readings or conduct seminars, I’m always asked, “Will I be in a relationship soon?” “Is the person I’m dating ‘the one’?” “Why do I always end up with the same type of person?” or “Why don’t my relationships ever work out?”

Nowhere in our lives is our emotional system and our ego tested more than in our relationships with other people. Our ability to give and receive love is crucial for healing and spiritual growth, whether it be with a spouse, lover, parent, child, or friend, and yet we find it so difficult to do! Some of our relationships are “in tune” karmically and others aren’t. Some work and some are extremely difficult. So why is this, and how can we all attract more harmonious relationships?

Sometimes people think they’ve found each other and they’re ecstatically happy, everything is just perfect. Then a year or two later, they begin to face difficulties, and they feel like they’ve been deceived. They thought they knew their lovers but found out that their lovers weren’t who they thought they were, and their lovers weren’t able to live up to their expectations. This happens so often; I see this all the time; and it is usually at this crucial moment that people decide to break up or divorce.

So much of this pain could be alleviated if we simply examined ourselves, our expectations, and what we want in a mate, before we let our emotions take over, get “swept away” and decide to get married. For example, one of my clients, Daphne, first came to me when she was in her early thirties. She was tall and thin, with long blond hair, a high paying prestigious job, and a terrific sense of humor and strong wit. Her entire life men had pursued her, and while she dated regularly, she never really cared for any of them and, on the surface at least, remained cynical about marriage and relationships.

What Daphne didn’t usually tell people was that her father was an alcoholic and although he was never physically abusive, he was emotionally absent. A successful man, he went to work every day and provided financially for his family, but when Daphne was growing up she never received the love and validation she desperately craved. She focused on her looks, developed her wit, and created a reputation as a fun-loving party girl to gain the attention of other men. She became something of a “prize” with many men vying for her attention but she never felt loved for herself.

She first came to me to find out when she would get married.
